PlagesGuadeloupe prides in 70 km of sandy beaches, among which the most beautiful is Deshaies, which accounts for the island’s nickname “Karukera” (the island of beautiful waters). Saint Maarten (36 beaches) and Saint Barthelemy (22 beaches) are a beloved bathing spot for American and European tourists. The sun is everywhere and at all times, so locals are much more reasonable when it comes to sunbathing: you will often see them taking a dive, drying in the sun and heading back to their everyday activities in less than an hour’s time. Beaches are more crowded at weekends and on holidays, though, so if it is possible, it is best to avoid the coast at these times, particularly Sainte-Anne and Saint-Francois. On the Saints you will discover pretty little deserted beaches in basically every creek. Marie-Galante is framed with twelve beaches, the longest of which is the 12-km Folle Anse. On Desirade only the southern coast is fit for bathing, look for the beaches of Baie-Mahault, Le Souffleur and Fifi.
