He was the best French sprinter in the 1960s and also one of the fastest in the world, assuring himself a regular place in the finals. Marius Trésor (Sainte-Anne 1950)Football player, who formed the “black garde” with his associate J-P Adams, and scored a few legendary goals, such as the one in the match between Germany and France in Sevilla 1982. Jocelyn Angloma (Abymes 1965)Ex-player of PSG, Marseille and the French national team, he terminated his career in 2002 (at the age of 37!), after having also played in the Italian and Spanish championships. Marie-Josée Perec (Basse Terre 1968)She became a worldwide sports legend following the Atlanta Olympic Games, after having won the gold medal for 400m two times. She was the second person in history to win both the 400m and the 200m. Patricia Girard (Pointe à Pitre 1968)Yet another of Gadeloupe’s wold-famous sprinters. Patricia Girard was also a star of the Atlanta Games. She won the bronze medal ahead of the American Gail Devers in the 100m hurdles race, which France has the annoying habit of often almost winning but never actually succeeding. Laura Flessel (Pointe-à-Pitre 1971)After a number of championship titles, the « Wasp » left her native island in 1990 to join the Racing Club of France. Results were soon to follow: in 1991 she became junior champion of France, in 1996 Olympic champion in both team and individual categories, and in 1997 bronze medal in the team category of the world championships. She was also world champion of epee in Seoul, 1999, and bronze medal in the Sydney Olympics in 2000. Lilian Thuram (Anse-Bertrand 1972)We all remember the famous scene: an unbelieving man on his knees before a euphoric public. What else could we be referring to but the second goal against Croatia on the 8 July, 1998, THE goal that qualified France for the finals… the result of which we all remember. What else is there to say..? Christine Arron (Abymes 1973)After arriving to Paris at the age of 18, she acquired international fame as champion of 200m in the Mediterranean games (1997), French champion of 200m (1997), European champion of 4 x 100m (1998) and silver medal of 4 x 100m relay in the World Championships (1999). Sylvain Wiltord (Neuilly-sur-Marne 1974)A discovery of Rennes, he subsequently joined the club of Arsène Wenger, Arsenal. Back from England he has recently become French champion in the colours of Lyon.
