Terre-de-Haut

A unique identity, bearing the century old influence of generations and generations of Bretons, Rochelais, Poitevins, who have all contributed to forging a strong sense of unity and solidarity in the minds of local people. Inhabitants of the Saints are proud of their island, and do their best to preserve its natural beauty. Day after day, cruise ships and boats bring over thousands of curious visitors, the majority of whom duly leave the island in the evening, giving the inhabitants the possibility to live their lives at their own rhythm. Life is thus more than just relaxed on The Saints: it’s simple and true.

Terre-de-Bas

If you’re in search for a spot to relax, Terre-de-Bas is the ideal place for you. The island’s two villages, Grande-Anse and Gros-Cap have been able to resist all we might describe as the destructive nature of tourism. Visiting the island, you’re sure to fall in love with the simple, tiny port and pretty beach of Grande-Anse. Skin colour in this area tends to be of a darker shade than on Terre-de-Haut, as slaves here outnumbered their Terre-de-Haut counterparts. Inhabitants of the Saints converse in French and in a local creole only slightly different from the one spoken on Guadeloupe. Terre-de-Haut hosts a unique population of Breton, Poitevin and Norman origin, characteristic of their white skin and blonde hair. Black labour was unknown here in slavery days, as the earth had proved too dry for sugar cane plantations. Life on the Saints today is mainly centred on fishing; don’t miss the return of the fishing boats to the harbour in the fishermen’s quarter. This time of day is also the opportunity to seize to take an appointment if you’re interested in participating in a local fishing trip.
