Marie Galante overview : DiscoverVous êtes ici : West Indies> Marie Galante> Discover : Overview Discover Marie Galante : OverviewOverviewMarie Galante is the one of the largest islands of the archipelago, second only to Guadeloupe itself. Nature did a wonderful job in this pearl of the Antillean arch, and the area’s cultural and historical heritage can also be discovered by strolling along its numerous mills, memories of an agricultural era singular to the region. A certain simplicity prevails the island, accounted for by the inhabitants’ rudimentary yet pleasant way of life. You will be welcomed with open arms and a genuine interest, and you will be greeted as a friend wherever you may venture. Though Marie Galante welcomes an increasing number of tourists every year, its main activity remains agriculture, which is the number one factor in its economy. Tourist infrastructures are simple: a couple of small hotels and many possibilities of staying with locals, and a few charming villas for more fortuned ones. The best way to discover the island is by renting a scooter, which is the ideal vehicle to track the territory and its myriad of small routes. Tourism, however, is expanding in Marie Galante today, and the island’s beaches are becoming more and more well-known as the most beautiful ones of the Lesser Antilles. Tourism professionals are beginning to take interest in this small Eldorado, and though Marie Galante used to be a one-day destination, an increasing number of travellers fall under its charm and prefer to stay a bit longer than planned. “The Pancake” is turning into a destination of its own, and it is getting harder and harder to find a place to stay on weekends and holidays, and renting a vehicle is close to impossible. As a matter of fact, Marie Galante had managed to watch the archipelago’s tourist occupation from a distance up to our days, but is today on the verge of waking up and proudly advertising its authenticity and traditions. Its marvellous nature attracts those who love vast plains and untamed beaches, in a perfectly preserved natural environment. Turtles are also a sight to see here: they come on the island’s shores to lay their eggs each summer.
