Marie Galante had managed to watch the archipelago’s tourist occupation from a distance up to our days, but is today on the verge of waking up and proudly advertising its authenticity and traditions. Its marvellous nature attracts those who love vast plains and untamed beaches, in a perfectly preserved natural environment. Turtles are also a sight to see here: they come on the island’s shores to lay their eggs each summer.
The island’s countless roads meander through the wild vegetation, gorged with the fragrance of essential oils (cinnamon wood, red-flowering gum, soapberry). Flowers are scarce, but the shade of coconut trees above the white and sandy beaches is a guarantee in itself for the dose of exotism you are looking for. Visitors can choose between taking the coastal road which lines Saint Louis Bay with its tiny fishing boats, or the country road in the direction of Capesterre. The coast is a succession of twelve beaches, among which the most famous are Vieux Fort (Massacre Beach) and Folle Anse (near Saint Louis). The beautiful Feuillere Beach offers a splendid view of the island of Dominica, and a quiet and relaxing time out in the shade of its sea grapes.
Further north the shore is lined with cliffs and the sea thunders with the force of its imposing waves. Mounteneers enjoy climbing around Caye Plate and its alignment of cliffs, which gives this part of the coast an even more savage aspect.
