Trekking and excursions on Martinique

A paradise for excursions and trekking

Martinique prides in great natural riches which can be observed in the natural park as well as on the rest of the island. Paths are well signposted by the National Forest Office, and are a delight for those interested in discovering the island’s incredible landscapes. Martinique’s major tourist attraction is its luxurious nature, and the possibility of endless discovery this earthly paradise has to offer.

Inevitable excursions are those to the summit of Mount Pelee or the Larcher volcano, situated in the commune of Diamant, as well as the Caravelle peninsula in Tartane, or the Jesuite Trail on Morne Rouge. More experienced hikers must not miss the circuit leading from Precheur to Grand Riviere.

Make sure to plan your excursion beforehand, as certain locations are only accessible on foot, and often necessitate the presence of a guide. Take time to find the service provider which best suits your needs.

The most obvious choice is the one of the eight companies associated with the Martinique Excursion Bureau (Bureau de la randonnee en Martinique), located in Saint Pierre in the building of the national park direction.

The Bureau’s guides offer good quality standards, and respect the laws and regulations concerning mountain excursions and hikes, and will thus brief you on how to proceed to your trip and exactly what equipment to prepare. Bring along your hiking clothes and suitable shoes, and try to have an idea of the region you are most interested in. The guides will then plan your itinerary according to your wishes, and provide you with any necessary extra equipment or food. A good way to be in total security, thanks to the professionalism of these organisations.

Excursions are classified into four categories depending on their difficulty :

  • Level 0 (a walk) ) :

Caravelle, Gorges de la Falaise, Peak of Creve-Coeur, Mount Vauclin .

  • Level 1 (for steady walkers) :

Larcher volcano, Precheur hot springs, Jesuite Trail on Morne Rouge

  • Level 2 (hikers): :

From Precheur to Grande Riviere, Mount Pelee from the direction of Aileron, “Canal of Slaves” of Carbet.

  • Level 3 (difficult): Peaks of Carbet
  • Excursions are not of great difficulty, especially around the route of Trace. Do take certain precautions, however: don’t forget your sun cream and windcheater, and pay attention to slippery roads after a rainy day. Tourist offices will provide you with appropriate maps of the department, featuring excursion and hiking itineraries. Be especially prudent when walking in mountainous regions, and take a guide with you whenever possible. Several associations can help you on this point.
