Ports and moorings on Saint Barthelemy

Saint Barthelemy’s denticulate coast offers many possibilities of mooring. Access to the port of Gustavia, on the western coast is well signposted: you can berth or simply lay up here. Moorings are generally sheltered from the wind, and as such always charge admission. The only free mooring on the island is the pleasant bay of Colombier, on the north-western tip of the island. Certain other ports, such as the bay of Saint Jean, are forbidden access, or reserved for rental agencies. The sheltered bay of Fourche Island, to the north-west, is also a fine location to tie up.

The port of Gustavia

A couple of decades ago, Gustavia was not more than a godforsaken little village, with a few remnants of the Swedish era floating in the bay. The island’s tourist boom has allowed a fast development in terms of infrastructure, and the port today is a nice place to stroll along the quays in the high season, gazing at the stupendous yachts swaying to the soft rhythms of the sea.
