Roads are scarce and narrow, and you are rarely permitted to surpass 45 km/h, so do your best to forget the 4th gear. When two cars meet, their drivers often say hello, as it is usually done in villages all over the world. As a result, be prepared to reach your destination rather slowly, and do not honk your horn if drivers stop awhile and engage in a short chitchat: this is just the done thing here. If you are late for your plane, smile and flash your lights, and they will let you pass without problem. If you are in no hurry, though, do as locals do and take time to live, to gaze at beautiful ladies and handsome young men… You will also be surprised by petrol prices: super will cost you not more than 0,69 € a litre. Two service stations are available on the island (Central station in Lorient and Saint Jean station), and both close around 5 or 6 p.m. from Monday to Friday, around noon on Saturday, and the whole day on Sunday, so have your credit card ready for night fills. Boat refuelling is available in Gustavia.
Service stations
Two service stations are available on the island. The Lorient station is open every day from 7.30 am. to noon, and from 2 p.m. to 5 p.m, closed on Thursdays, Saturdays afternoons and Sundays.
Hitchhiking
A rather popular way of getting around the island, and practically without danger. Simply raise your thumb and off you go.
Taxies
The island hosts two taxi ranks, one in Gustavia and the other one at the airport. Taxies are but rarely used, and mostly by those who rarely move from their hotels. Most people prefer their Mini Mokes and Smarts, though, or to hitchhike around, which generally works if you look friendly enough. Airport taxi rank tel : 05 90 27 75 81.
