Blue leisure activities on Saint Lucia: Skin diving

There are many spectacular diving spots near the coast of Saint Lucia; some of them are easy to explore, but others require a good dose of experience. The Keyhole Pinnacles site is made up of four seamounts that rise from an incredible depth up to just a few meters from the surface.

  • Superman's Flight

provides drift diving along a rock face which gently slopes down to 488 m. At the foot of the Gros Piton mountain, the Coral Gardens site extends over depths ranging from 4.5 m to 15.2 m.
  • La Raye Cove

located halfway along the west coast, offers a superb rock face for drift diving. Enormous rocks cover up a rocky formation for which the gradient is less pronounced, creating fascinating rock formations to explore.

  • At the tip of Chastenet Cove

a plateau with a low gradient extends over a length ranging from 12 to 18 m. The reefs stretch out over a depth of 42 m, forming a unique chain of coral that escapes the meanders of the bay.

  • Waiwinette Shipwreck

A certain number of shipwrecks offer adventure and great exploration opportunities to divers. Those with experience can explore the wreckage of the Waiwinette cargo ship which lies 27 m on the seafloor to the south of the island. The currents in this area make diving very difficult. Those with less experience can take a look at the shipwreck off the coast of Castries which is located 6 m under the surface.

The most beautiful diving spots

  • Chastanet Cove. One of the most impressive sites is the astonishing reef at Chastanet Cove, located to the southwest of the island. Divers can reach the site directly via the shallow waters that can reach 7.5 m. The reef forms a wall of coral which has come away from the coast, extending across a width that varies from 6 to 42 m. This wall, which stretches from Chastanet Cove Bay around the headlands of Grand Caille and towards the haven of la Soufriere, provides one of Saint Lucia's best diving experiences.

  • Anse La Raye. Recognised as one of the spots providing one of the best walls and one of Saint Lucia's most refined drift diving experiences, La Raye Cove is located under a wall in relatively shallow water. Interesting formations on the embankment, made up of enormous rocks, stimulate the imagination and provide tantalising enjoyment for the eye.

  • Coral Gardens. Located at the foot of Gros Piton mountain, the site provides a landscape that will take your breath away, whether on the surface or under the water. Five finger-like coral formations extend over depths varying from 4.5 to 15 m.

  • Fairy Land. At the tip of Chastanet Cove, a plateau called Fairy Land gently slopes over a distance of 12 to 18 m. The strong currents here keep the coral and sea sponges clean, thus making for excellent visibility. Great for underwater photography.

  • The Key Hole Pinnacles. Designated as one of the top 10 diving spots by Caribbean Travel & Life magazine, it boasts seamounts described by the magazine as: « four seamounts incrusted with coral and sea fans which rise up like an illusion from the ocean depths »

  • Lesleen M Shipwreck. The Lesleen M is a 50-m cargo ship that was sunk in 1986 by the Fishing Authority in order to form an artificial reef. The ship lies vertically 18 m under the surface near the Cochon Cove, on the west coast, just to the south of Marigot Bay.

  • Superman’s Flight. This spot gets its name from a scene in the film Superman II that was shot on Saint Lucia. It offers a wall that gently slopes down to 488 m, and it can be explored via drift diving. The strong currents ensure good visibility and allow you to see very clearly during undersea exploration. Divers can enter the water at the foot of Petit Piton mountain.

  • The Thing. According to those that have seen it, The Thing is the equivalent of the Loch Ness Monster on holiday at Saint Lucia. This mysterious creature has been seen regularly (but only at night) at Chastanet Cove.
